Last summer, the Mitchell Family undertook a project to replace the bridge to the farm. This is an urgent project to replace the bridge, without which, we won't be able to continue renting the farmland. The farmer has expressed concern about the condition of the bridge, and he is afraid that the bridge might cave in from the weight of a large combine or a trailer load of grain, or something similar.
The proposed solution to ensure harvesting of the current crop, maintain access, repair and replace the bridge is a three part project: Phase 1 of this project, would be a temporary fix, which would call for a loggers matt to be put over the existing bridge. This should give us approximately 2 years to get our money together to pay for phases 2 and 3. We have money for phase 1 of this project.
Phase 2, which we are calling The 50 Year Bridge, is where we need your help. This will require us hiring a contractor to construct and build this bridge, under the consultation and advice of the Northampton County Soil and Water Conservation Office. We have estimates in the range of $20,000.00 and up to build the "50 Year Bridge". We are trying to identify at least 100 family members to make a one-time donation of $200.00 each. This plea goes out to all family members who are 18 yrs of age, not in school, (college) who would be willing and able to help with this special and urgent matter. We have set a deadline for July 2022, at the next Family Reunion. This money will only be used for the bridge, all other projects have been put on hold.
This money has nothing to do with our responsibilities toward our family dues of $25.00 per year. If you have questions, you may call Audrey Taylor, Millard Mitchell, or your family representative. We really can't do this without you.
We have set up a savings account at the local credit union, so we can earn as much interest as possible on our money. For your convenience, $MitchellPlace has been established as well.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Audrey, Millard, or your family representative
An old man going a lone highway,
Came, at the evening cold and gray,
To a chasm vast and deep and wide.
Through which was flowing a sullen tide
The old man crossed in the twilight dim,
The sullen stream had no fear for him;
But he turned when safe on the other side
And built a bridge to span the tide.
"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim near,
"You are wasting your strength with building here;
Your journey will end with the ending day,
You never again will pass this way;
You've crossed the chasm, deep and wide,
Why build this bridge at evening tide?"
The builder lifted his old gray head;
"Good friend, in the path I have come," he said,
"There followed after me to-day
A youth whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm that has been as naught to me
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be;
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building this bridge for him!"
